DMW’s 1st Seafarers Jobs Fair 2023

The Philippines has experienced a significant surge in the seafaring industry, positioning it as one of the fastest-growing sectors within the country. As the primary supplier of Filipino seafarers worldwide, the Philippines holds a critical role in the global maritime industry. In 2019 alone, over 500,000 Filipino seafarers were deployed. However, the COVID-19 pandemic dealt a severe blow to the maritime industry in 2020, resulting in a substantial decline in job opportunities for approximately 200,000 deployed Filipino seafarers. Thankfully, with the industry's recovery and the resurgence of tourism, particularly in the cruise ship sector, employment prospects have rebounded quickly. Presently, seafaring employs around 6% of the population, bolstering the economy through vessel operations and maritime transportation.

To commemorate the Day of the Seafarers in 2023, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) organized its inaugural Seafarers Job Fair. Held on the 28th of June 2023 at the DMW Center, Blas Ople Building, Ortigas, Mandaluyong City, the event aimed to provide 1,500 job positions. The DMW collaborated with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to orchestrate the fair, strategically coinciding with the Feast of Sacrifice, Eid al-Adha, observed by the Muslim community. The response to the job fair was overwhelming, with more than 3,000 aspiring applicants participating.

Ensuring the provision of high-quality opportunities, the DMW extended invitations to 25 esteemed sea-based manning agencies that specialize in cargo, bulk, tanker, and passenger ships. The DMW's target for this year is to process over 400,000 Filipino seafarers, surpassing the 300,000 deployed in 2022. Undersecretary Hans Cacdac emphasized the close collaboration between the DMW, TESDA, MARINA, and other pertinent agencies to meet market demands, adapt to technological advancements, and facilitate the reskilling and upskilling of Filipino seafarers.

Multinational Ship Management Inc. (MSM), was one of the trusted manning agencies, actively participated in this event. MSM was also invited to the nationwide Overseas Filipino Workers Mega Job Fair held on June 12, 2023, in celebration of the Philippines' Independence Day. During these events, MSM offered employment opportunities to aspiring hotel professionals for its clients' cruise ships. Participating in the Seafarers Job Fair was an honorable and invaluable experience for our team, as it allowed us to serve our countrymen and inspire Filipinos to pursue careers in the maritime cruise industry. Throughout the fair, MSM received over 200 applications from qualified candidates.
